Seabird College is running Early Childhood course. 

The next course offered will be the Ey Qual Speech and Language Assistant Certificate Program.



 

EY QWÁL SPEECH AND LANGUAGE ASSISTANT CERTIFICATE

The Ey Qwàl Speech and Language Assistant Certificate is designed to improve the individual’s knowledge of how to support children who have speech and/or language needs.

Through this program the adult will learn special techniques of how to encourage the development of communication in the early years.

 

PROGRAM GOALS

The overall goal of the training program is to graduate trained people who have the skills to deliver speech and language assistance to First Nations children and their families with speech and language challenges.

 

Other goals include:

• To increase the number of skilled speech and language assistants

• To increase the skills and knowledge of providers

• To raise public awareness of the expected speech and language development

• To provide prospective employers of parent aides or nannies with training

• opportunities as a condition of employment

 

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Graduates of the Ey Qwàl Speech and Language Assistant Certificate Program could become:

• Speech and Language Assistants

• Supported Child Development Consultants and Support Workers

• Early Childhood Educators

• Preschool, Daycare, Kindergarten or Headstart Employees

 

ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS

• Grade 12 graduation or GED

• Early Childhood Education Certificate and/or Diplomas

• Teacher’s Aide Certificate and Diplomas

 

WHO SHOULD APPLY?

Early Childhood Educators, Teaching Assistants and Caregivers should apply.

The course material covers the speech and language techniques for preschool age children.

 

WHEN TO APPLY

Applications are accepted on a continuous basis throughout the year. Qualified applicants are considered for the next intake in which there is space.

 

HOW TO APPLY

Students may usually register two weeks prior to the course start date.

 

Note: Registrations will be received as long as space is available.

 

DATES AND TIMES

Courses may be offered in the evening or on Saturdays. Classes are also available through videoconferencing.

 

ABOUT THE COURSES

All seven courses (each is 12 hours in length) incorporate Sto:lo culture.

This program can be completed in 84 hours. It is offered on alternate Saturdays.

Each session consists of 6 hours.

PROGRAM CONTENT AND OUTLINE

In addition to classroom instruction and observations, students will be required to read and study outside of class approximately three hours per week.

SP 101 Language and Pre Literacy Development

SP 102 Learning Language through Play, Music and Art

SP 103 Receptive & Expressive Language Assessment and Planning

SP 104 Teaching Strategies for Language and Articulation

SP 105 Articulation and Phonology

SP 106 Communication for Diverse Populations

 

EVALUATION

Assignments, quizzes and exams will be given during each course.

 

TRANSFER CREDIT

Applicants who have completed equivalent post secondary level courses at other accredited institutions may be eligible for transfer credit.

 

Applicants eligible for such credit may be asked to provide detailed course outlines for courses under consideration.

 

Ey Qwàl Speech and Language Assistant Certificate graduates will be eligible to receive 6 credits towards their Early Childhood Education Certificate

COURSE START DATE:

Potential start date depends on interest. We are looking at a Spring 2010 start date for the course.
